Bupa Great Capital Run
This was the first competitive race that I had ever taken part in; therefore I was slightly nervous leading up to the event, and I was unsure what to expect from the day. However these fears were quickly put aside once I turned up.
There were a variety of transport links which made the event easily assessable. This meant that there wasn’t a problem with overcrowding around the tube stations.
The event was supported by Capital FM. They were able to generate a positive atmosphere on the day, not only for the runners but the spectators as well.
One thing that I did like about the event was that everything was clearly signposted; from the drinks stations, toilets, to the warm up areas. I also popped into the Lucozade Sport Performance Zone and picked up a drink and some (much needed) pre race advice from one of their Sports Scientists. I was also given a pace band, which was great, as I was able to keep to a consistent pace around the course.
The field of runners were made up of variety of running abilities – from those looking to smash their PBs, to those who were just looking to get around.
Runners start times were based on the times that we had all put on our application forms, prior to the event. This meant that you were placed with runners of a similar ability and avoided being slowed down (or slowing someone else down).
The course itself was fairly flat, and wide enough to avoid any over crowding.
Capital FM had placed live music at various points of the race to keep you motivated.
As the event took place in Hyde Park, there was a strong level of crowd support, which was great! There were drinks stations at 5k, 7k & 8k, which was needed, especially when I started to tire.
Overall I was impressed by the whole day. I was able to clock a time of 46 minutes, (which wasn’t bad for a first timer!). I’ll be back next year to see if I can beat it!
